How to subscribe to the Danuta Hinc blog

Subscribing to this blog will make it easier for you to stay up to date on the latest posts and comments. If you are unfamiliar with how blogs work, read on.

You can subscribe to the Danuta Hinc blog by clicking the “Sign me up!” button located on the right side of the screen. You will be notify by email about new posts.

Also, you can subscribe to the Danuta Hinc blog using one of two “feeds” that appear at the top right corner of the blog home page. One feed sends you the latest blog Posts; the other sends you new reader Comments about a particular blog post as they appear on the blog. The Danuta Hinc blog uses the feed format known as RSS, for “really simple syndication.”

Blog feeds relieve you of the need to periodically visit the blog to look for new posts. Instead, a program called an “aggregator,” “feed reader,” or “news reader” monitors the blog and grabs new posts or comments as they appear on the blog.

Whenever you check your feed reader, it displays the latest posts and comments. It’s just like subscribing to a variety of magazines and newspapers the old-fashioned way — by mail. Instead of having to go to a bookstore or library to obtain your favorite publications, they just show up in your mailbox as new issues are published. Feed readers provide the same service for content published electronically via the web.

There are two types of readers. One type is software you actually install on your computer. The other type of reader is a web site, like “Google Reader,” that you open an account on.

There are many web-based feed readers. The three available to you on the Danuta Hinc blog are Bloglines, My Yahoo, and Google Reader, but you can subscribe using any of the other numerous readers on the web.

If you click the live link next to the Post or Comments feeds on the Danuta Hinc blog, you will be offered the following options for subscribing:

“Live Bookmarks” will help you add the blog’s web address (URL) to your browser’s Bookmarks menu. To see new blog posts, you have to manually click on this bookmark. You will not be notified automatically when there is a new post.

“Choose Application” subscribes you to this blog via feed-reader software you have already installed on your computer. For example, you could download and install the popular and FREE program called Feedreader (www.feedreader.com)

“Bloglines” takes you to a web-based reader called Bloglines. You have to register for an account on Bloglines using your email address and a password of your choosing.

“My Yahoo” allows you to subscribe to the blog using the My Yahoo personal home page service, using your Yahoo account if you have one. If you choose to make My Yahoo your personal home page, the Danuta Hinc blog will appear on the home page.

The “Google” option allows you to subscribe to the Post or Comment feed using your Google account, if you have one. The blog can either be part of your personal Google home page, or the feed will be added to Google’s feed reader, called “Google Reader.”

Firefox web browser 3.0 and later is also a feed reader. If you click either of the RSS buttons you will see a new RSS icon folder appear on your bookmark toolbar. Inside that folder you will see hyperlinks to the new posts or comments. You can then click the hyperlink to retrieve that one.

Internet Explorer 7 or 8 browser does it slightly differently when you click the RSS icon. You won’t see hyperlinks to individual posts or comments, just a link to Danuta’s blog.

Outlook email is also a feed reader. If you use IE to click the the RSS button in Danuta’s blog, you also will get updates automatically in Outlook. You will get separate messages for each new article or comment and you will see the first 15-25 words in it without having to go to the blog.

There are other email programs that also work as RSS readers, e.g. Thunderbird.
